SMIC Chip Supplies From the US Faces a Snag as Officials Move to Seal Loophole

(WSJ) Chinese chipmaker SMIC could face a block for its chip materials from the US as the Defense Department advises sealing a loophole used for sourcing.

The proposal by the Defense Department is now being considered by US officials, but some Commerce Department chiefs are considering blocking it.

The proposed move happened after SMIC was denied access to advanced manufacturing equipment purchases from the US last year on alleged links with the Chinese military.

If the proposal goes through, it would be a blow to SMIC, which serves as the most significant contract chipmaker in China. The US is also said to consider more tech firms to the blacklist, in what is seen as Washington’s move to broaden the net against Chinese companies.
