Retail Trade Sales Gain 0.3% In the Euro Area and EU in August

(Eurostat) Retail trade sales surged by 0.3% in the euro area and EU in August from July. The retail sales remained unchanged in the euro area and increased in the EU by 1.1% from the prior year.

Euro Area and EU Retail Sales

For non-food products, retail trade sales rose by a monthly rate of 1.8% in both the euro area and EU. On a year-over-year basis, the retail trade sales rose by 1.3% in the euro area and 3.0% in the EU.

The retail sales fell by 0.1% for automotive fuels, while food, drinks, and tobacco were down by 1.7% in the euro area in August. The parameters were down by 0.3% and 1.5%, respectively, in the EU.

Automotive fuels declined by 1.2% yearly in the euro area, while foods, drinks, and tobacco posted a 1.9% plunge. In the EU, the same parameters were down by 2.1% and 1.5%, respectively.

Malta, Ireland, and Slovakia posted the largest monthly increases in retail trade sales. Denmark, Estonia, and France had the largest declines.

On a yearly basis, Malta, Croatia, and Slovenia had the strongest increases in retail sales. Belgium, France, Spain, and Luxembourg had the largest declines.
