Pelosi Narrowly Re-Elected as House Speaker Despite Political Uncertainty

Nancy Pelosi was re-elected speaker of the U.S House of Representatives on Sunday by a 216-209 margin as the new Congress took office, according to Reuters. Her re-election comes when the U.S faces political uncertainty with Senate control undecided and looming Republican fight over presidential election results.

  • In her re-election, Pelosi cited coronavirus as the urgent priority and pledged further aid in addition to the latest $892 billion package passed by Congress in December.
  • Political uncertainty is rife as the Senate remains Republican-run, strengthening President Donald Trump’s rigging claims ahead of twin elections in Georgia on Tuesday.
  • Republican legislators plan to challenge the Presidential election results when Congress certifies it on Wednesday.
  • Republican Senator Ted Cruz’s push for an emergency 10-day audit of election results in battleground states drew criticism on Sunday from a staunch Trump ally Lindsey Graham.
  • House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, the chamber’s No. 2 Democrat, asked the new Congress to “turn the page” on partisan division “and build cooperation.
  • A Republican win of one or both Georgia Senate seats would cement its control, while a twin win for Democrats would produce a 50-50 Senate.
