Optimism Loses 20M OP Tokens, Cites Wintermute’s Error

(Optimism) Ethereum scaling layer Optimism has lost 20 million OP governance tokens worth around $35 million to a hacking attack.

Optimism says that the hack was facilitated by a mistaken Ethereum address provided by market maker Wintermute. The address had not yet been deployed on Optimism.

Optimism says that the 20 million tokens were sent to Wintermute’s Ethereum L1 address. Since the address had not been synched or deployed to an Optimism L2 address, they were left inaccessible.

The hacker has reportedly sold off one million OP tokens for ETH while Wintermute continues to track the thief. Wintermute has committed to purchasing the tokens stolen by the hacker.

Optimism is still adamant that the stolen tokens have not been used to influence the DAO’s governance, although they are still monitoring the situation.

OP is currently down 11.72%.
