Nonfarm Payroll Employment Misses Estimates after Gaining by 194,000

(BLS) US total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 194,000 in September, a deviation from expected increase of 500,000. Unemployment was down by 0.4% to a post-pandemic record low of 4.8%, better than expected 5.1%.

The number of unemployed persons was down to 7.7 million after a decline of 710,000 in September. 

The labor force participation rate was little changed from August after posting 61.6% in September. The participation rate is 1.7% below February 2020.

The number of persons currently out of the labor force but want a job was little changed at 6.0 million, but higher by 959,000 from February 2020.

Wages rose by 0.6% in September, taking the total year over year gains to 4.6%

Leisure and hospitality added the most jobs at 74,000, while professional and business services posted 60,000 jobs. Retail jobs rose by 56,000.
