NFP Employment Jumps by 850,000 — Unemployment Rate More than Expected at 5.9%

(Bureau of Labor Statistics) US nonfarm payroll jobs rose by 850,000 in June, more than an estimated 706,000. The unemployment rate rose to 5.9%, more than the projected 5.6%.

The labor force participation rate came unchanged at 61.6%, 1.7% lower than February 2020.

The number of unemployed people was little changed in June at 9.5 million.

The number of people not in the labor force but wanting a job was little changed at 6.4 million in June but were 1.4 million above February 2020.

Average hourly earnings rose by 0.33% in June and 3.6% year-over-year.

The job adds means that a total of 15.6 million jobs lost during the pandemic have been recovered, with total employment now 7.13 million lower than February 2020.
