(Moderna) US Food and Drug Administration has extended the emergency use authorization of Moderna’s booster vaccine shot against Covid-19.
The booster dose will be used on all individuals 18 years and above who have undergone full vaccination with any other vaccine shot.
The dose will be administered at least six months following completion of the primary Covid-19 inoculation.
Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel says the authorization comes at the appropriate time ahead of winter months when there could be a spike in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations.
Previously, the FDA approved the Moderna Covid booster to those above 65 years and adults between 18 and 64 years at risk of severe disease symptoms. Adults 18-64 years in occupations with higher exposure to Covid-19 were also authorized.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now expected to meet to come up with recommendations for the nationwide rollout of the Covid-19 boosters.
