Jobless Claims Surge by 7,000 in the Last Week of 2021

(Department of Labor) US jobless claims were recorded at 207,000 in the week that ended January 1, up 7,000 from the previous week.

US Initial Claims

The previous week’s jobless claims were revised up by 2,000 to 200,000. The claims rose 4,750 to 204,500 on a four-week moving average. 

Continuing claims rose by 36,000 to 1.754 million. The claims fell by 61,250 to 1.799 million on a four-week moving average.

Under various state programs, the initial claims rose by 22.3% or 57,599 to 315,469. The increase was higher than the expected gain of 19.6% or 50,464. 

The continuing claims under the state programs rose by 14.2% or 232,523 to 1.8711 million, more than the projected gain of 12.0% or 195,929.

The initials rose the highest in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and New York. The states of California, Texas, Virginia, Alabama, and Wisconsin posted the largest declines in initial claims.
