Jobless Claims Above Estimate after Another Increase of 11,000

(Department of Labor) US jobless claims rose by 11,000 to reach 362,000 in the week that ended September 25. The claims were higher than expected 335,000 as Delta variant slowed hiring.

Jobless claims rose by 4,250 to 340,000 on a 4-week average.

Continuing claims fell by 18,000 to reach 2.802 million. The previous week’s continuing claims were revised down by 25,000 to 2.820 million.

Initial claims under state programs fell by 2.7% or 8,326 to reach 298,255. The decline was a lower than expected reduction of 6.2% or 18,940.

California led the increase in initial claims at 17,218, followed by Virginia, Ohio, Oregon, and Maryland. Louisiana posted the most significant declines in initial claims at -6,935, followed by New York, Missouri, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
