House Republicans have chosen Majority Leader Steve Scalise as their candidate for speaker, replacing the previously ousted Kevin McCarthy. This decision comes after Scalise defeated Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan for the nomination.
House-Floor Vote Approaching
The House of Representatives is now preparing for a floor vote to select the speaker, which could take place as early as Wednesday. It is worth noting that there is currently no permanent speaker in the chamber, following McCarthy’s removal on October 3rd. In order to secure victory, the chosen candidate must receive a majority of the votes cast.
Scalise’s Credentials and Priorities
Scalise has been vocal about his support for several important measures, including the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). He believes that his focus on these issues showcases his dedication to addressing matters that directly impact the lives of Americans. Additionally, Scalise’s strong fundraising abilities have also played a part in his nomination, with Reuters reporting that he has contributed significant dollars to party allies.
Urgency to Choose a Speaker
As the deadline for funding the federal government approaches (November 17th), House lawmakers feel increasing pressure to select a new speaker. There is an underlying desire amongst members to offer support to Israel as it battles Hamas. Failure to pass a bill to keep the government open beyond the 17th could result in a partial shutdown.
