Former President Donald Trump Faces Challenging Poll Results

New poll numbers reveal that former President Donald Trump is not receiving favorable support from Americans if he were to become the GOP nominee in the 2024 election. A significant 53% of Americans state that they would definitely not back him, with an additional 11% saying they probably would not support him.

Despite this, the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll shows that Trump still maintains strong backing within his own party. Among Republicans, 63% express their desire for him to run again, which marks an increase from the 55% who shared the same sentiment in April, even as he faced a series of criminal charges.

Notably, the poll was conducted before Trump faced charges late Monday in Georgia. Alongside 18 others, he was accused of conspiring to overturn the presidential election results in the state in 2020.

The poll results arrive ahead of the first GOP candidates’ debate in Milwaukee on August 23rd. Despite being the clear frontrunner in Republican nomination polling with approximately 55% support according to RealClearPolitics, Trump has yet to confirm his attendance at the debate. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis trails far behind in second place with nearly 15% support. Trump’s campaign highlighted the RealClearPolitics survey and other polls in an email sent on Thursday.

In addition, two other polls released this week demonstrate a competitive match between President Joe Biden and Trump in a potential 2024 matchup. In surveys conducted by Marist and Quinnipiac, Biden and Trump are almost neck and neck, with Biden having a slight edge of just one point.

The coming months will reveal how these poll numbers shape the political landscape for the next presidential race.
