(Forbes) Ford is taking all-electric vehicle technology a notch higher, with an innovative vehicle-to-vehicle recharging system expected on the F-150 Lightning pickup that will debut next year.
Ford expects its F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid trucks to carry an onboard generator with a high-capacity battery system to provide emergency power during an outage or for power top-ups for other EVs.
Ford, which is already demonstrating the innovative technology at its Lightning assembly in Dearborn, Michigan, says the system can charge any other all-electric car at the same rate as a home system. The system carries all the charging equipment.
Ford’s e-powertrain systems engineer Patrick Soderborg says the new truck will also be useful in “home energy management and grid balancing.”
With the vehicle-to-vehicle recharging technology, Ford is attempting to lure the traditional pickup-truck customers to the new technology as it embarks on the EV journey.
