(WSJ) The US is set to accelerate its network of electric vehicle charging stations after a $1 trillion infrastructure package was passed by Congress on Friday.
The package directs $5 billion to expand EV charging networks on highways, with the limited infrastructure currently seen as the missing link in the EV adoption.
About $2.5 billion in funding will be channeled towards EV charging or alternatives that include hydrogen-fueling systems. Another $2.5 billion will be used for electrifying school buses.
The infrastructure package also includes funding to transform the old-age electric grid that will become part of the transformed transportation system.
Rob Gramlich, president Grid Strategies, believes more money is required to build the network charging infrastructure. The analyst says it would take about $300 billion of new investment to reach Biden’s decarbonization goals in the decade.
