Euro Area Swings Into €27.2B Trade Deficit in January

(Eurostat) The international trade in goods balances was posted at a deficit of 27.2 billion euros in the euro area in January 2022, compared to a surplus of 10.7 billion euros in the prior year.

The trade deficit reflected a higher 44.7% increase in imports which hit 226.7 billion euros. Exports increased by 18.9% to 199.5 billion euros. 

The intra-euro area traded improved by 24.2% year-over-year to hit 192.3 billion euros in January 2022.

In January to December 2021, the euro area posted a trade surplus of 128.5 billion euros, down from 233.9 billion euros in the prior year period. Intra-euro area trade increased by 20.8% to 2,181.1 billion euros in the same period. 

In the EU, the trade deficit was posted at 36.0 billion euros in January 2022, compared to a surplus of 8.5 billion euros in the prior year. Intra-EU trade improved by 22% to $299.6 billion euros in the same period.

In January to December 2021, the EU posted a trade surplus of 67.9 billion euros, a decline from a surplus of 215.8 billion euros in the prior year. Intra-EU trade was up 20.0% to 3,427.8 billion euros in the same period.
