Euro Area Posts a Trade Deficit of €7.6B in February 2022

(Eurostat) The international trade in goods deficit in the euro area was recorded at 7.6 billion euros in February 2022, compared to a surplus of 23.6 billion euros in the prior year.

The trade deficit reflected a higher rise in imports, which stood at 223.4 billion euros in February, up 38.8% from the prior year. The exports were 215.8 billion euros, an increase of 17.0% from the prior year.

Intra-euro area trade increased by 25.6% year-over-year to 202.5 billion euros.

In the January to February 2022 period, the trade deficit was 34.9 billion euros, compared to a surplus of 34.2 billion euros in the prior year.

In the EU, the trade deficit was recorded at 15.8 billion euros, compared to a surplus of 21.4 billion euros in the prior year. 

The EU imports rose by 44.7% in February from the prior year to hit 207.7 billion euros. The imports rose by 16.4% to 164.8 billion euros in the same period.

Intra-EU trade improved by 22.6% year-over-year to hit 315.1 billion euros in February 2022.

During the January to February 2022 period, the EU’s trade deficit was recorded at 52.7 billion euros, compared to a surplus of 29.8 billion euros in the prior year.
