Euro Area, EU Unemployment Edges Lower in January

(Eurostat) The euro area unemployment rate was 6.8% in January, declining from 7.0% in the previous month, and 8.3% in the comparable month of 2021.

Euro Area and EU Unemployment Rates

In the EU, unemployment was lower at 6.2%, below the rate of 6.3% posted in December 2021, and 7.5% in January 2021.

Youth unemployment rate was recorded at 14.0% in the EU in January 2022, below 14.3% in the previous month. In the euro area, youth unemployment was 13.9%, below 14.2% in the previous month. 

On a gender basis, the unemployment rate for women was 6.5% in the EU, below 6.6% in December. In the euro area, women unemployment was 7.1% in January, below 7.2% in December.

The unemployment rate for men was at 6.0% in January in the EU, down from 6.1% the previous month. In the euro area, men unemployment rate fell from 6.7% to 6.6% in January.
