Euro Area Current Account Plunges into a €2B Deficit in March

(ECB) The current account deficit in the euro area was 2 billion euros in March 2022, a significant decline from the 16 billion euros surplus in the prior month.

Euro Area Current Account Balance

In the 12 months to March, the current account was posted at a surplus of 219 billion euros or 1.8% of euro area GDP. The surplus was below 294 billion euros in the prior year.

The financial account showed that euro area residents acquired non-euro area portfolio investment securities of 458 billion euros in the 12 months to March. The non-residents acquired euro area portfolios amounting to 170 billion euros. 

In the other investment category, the net acquisitions of non-euro area assets by the residents amounted to 325 billion euros in the 12 months to March.  The acquisitions follow disposals of 294 billion euros in the year to March 2021.
