Euro Area and EU Posts Bigger Trade Deficit in March as Imports Surge

The Euro area recorded a trade deficit of 16.4 billion euros in March compared to a surplus of 22.5 billion euros in the prior year. DAX is down -0.69%, EURUSD is up +0.12%.

  • The trade deficit reflected a lower 14.0% increase in exports, compared to a 35.4% rise in imports into the euro area in March. 
  • Within the intra-euro area, trade improved by 21.2% year-over-year to 236.8 billion euros. In the three months from January to March 2022, intra-euro area trade increased by 24.4% year-over-year to 636.0 billion euros. 
  • In the European Union, the trade deficit was 27.7 billion euros in March from the prior year. The deficit reflected a 12.8% rise in exports, lower than a 40.4% increase in imports.
  • Overall intra-EU trade improved by 19.7% in March from the prior year. In the three months from January to March, intra-EU trade rose by 22.2% from the prior year.
