(Eurostat) Euro area and EU posted a 5.2% increase in GDP in 2021, despite growth easing in the last quarter of the year.
Growth in the fourth quarter eased at 0.3% in the euro area and 0.4% in the EU, compared to a gain of 2.3% and 2.2% in both regions, respectively.
The GDP in the euro area expanded by 4.6% in the fourth quarter from the prior year, while that of the EU grew by 4.8% in the same period.
Spain led the largest increases in GDP in the fourth quarter from the third with an expansion of 2.0%, while Portugal and Sweden came second and third at 1.6% and 1.4%, respectively.
Austria posted a 2.2% decline in growth in the fourth quarter from the third, followed by Germany at minus 0.7%, and Latvia after a 0.1% contraction.
