(Bloomberg) The European Union has slapped Amazon with a record 746 million euro or $888 million fine for violation of the block’s data protection rules.
In a July 16 decision, the EU claimed that Amazon violated the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation through the processing of personal data.
Amazon has criticized the EU’s decision as lacking merit, claiming there was no data breach and it will appeal.
Last month, the European Commission said it also sees potential antitrust issues with Amazon and others’ voice assistants.
The EU’s verdict ends a probe that began in 2018, filed by the French privacy rights group La Quadrature du Net, which has welcomed the decision.
EU regulators are tightening the rope following the enactment of GDPR rules in May 2018 and allows the watchdogs to fine entities up to 4% of their global annual sales.
