Durable Goods Orders Fall by 0.4% in September

(Census Bureau) Orders for manufactured durable goods fell by 0.4% or $1.0 billion to reach a low of $261.3 billion. The fall in durable goods orders happens after four straight months of increases.

Excluding transportation, durable goods orders rose by 0.4%. Transportation equipment orders were down for the last three months and dragged orders down by 2.3% or $1.8 billion in September.

The durable goods orders fell by 2.0%, excluding defense.

Shipments of durable goods rose by 0.4% or $1.1 billion to reach $257.0 billion, after a 0.5% decrease in August.

Unfilled orders were up for the eighth straight month by 0.7%, or $8.8 billion to $1,247 billion.

Inventories for durable goods were up for the eighth straight month by 0.9%, or $4.0 billion to $462.7 billion.

Nondefense orders of capital goods fell by 4.2% or $3.7 billion to $84.9 billion in September.
