General Motors Co. will halt production at several North American factories and extend shutdowns at others, according to the Wall Street Journal. The decision reflects worsening chip shortage for U.S auto giants, which threaten strong sales rebound.
Three plants previously unaffected by semiconductor supply problems will be idled or have output reduced for one or two weeks.
Models affected by the halt include Chevrolet Traverse SUV and the Cadillac XT5 and XT6 SUVs.
GM said it would resume production at a Missouri factory that makes midsize pickup trucks on April 12.
A similar move was taken by Ford Motor Co. last week, with the automaker set to deepen production cuts in North America.
U.S President Joe Biden ordered a supply-chain review of the chip shortage and met with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to address the issue.
Top White House administration officials are expected to meet with chip manufacturers to discuss what might be done.
General Motors stock is currently flat. GM: NYSE is up 0.10% on premarket.
