(Bloomberg) Beijing wants coal miners in the country to pump more resources to boost coal output to over 12 million tons a day in the final three months of the year.
China’s call comes as the country faces a power crisis that has hit key industries, with analysts warning it could cripple global growth.
Beijing authorities are now seen reversing previous moves to transition to green energy by reviving coal mining and lifting rules that aimed to tame power prices.
China is also considering foreign imports of fuels amid trade tensions with the US and Australia.
Although the current moves to boost energy output are achieving success, there are warnings that the production has to increase faster to meet demand.
With the power targets far from being reached, analysts are now warning that China is heading for its worst power shortage since 2010 in the winter.
Industry executives are also raising the alarm that the rush to produce coal could cost lives, with a series of mining fatalities having earlier constrained supply.
China is estimated to record a 350 million and 400 million supply gap of coal for the full year 2021.
