California City First in U.S. to Outlaw Construction of New Gas Stations

Petaluma City in California outlawed the construction of new gas stations and additional pumps at existing stations as part of plans to completely phase out carbon emissions by 2030, according to a report.

  • The legislation will streamline the citywide process for adding more electric vehicle infrastructure like electric charging bays and hydrogen fuel cell facilities.
  • City councilor D’Lynda Fischer who introduced the measure said existing fossil fuel stations are encouraged to add electric chargers and create another source of fueling clients can use.
  • Petaluma is 15 square miles in size with a population of 61,000.
  • Other statewide plans in California include an electric highway along the Pacific Coast, on top of policies prepared at the federal level to boost renewables and other sustainable stocks.
  • The United States has an estimated 450,000 brownfield sites or areas where expansion, or reuse may be complicated by the presence of a hazardous substance. Approximately half of which are likely to be impacted by petroleum.
