Building Permits Climb 0.3% in April amid Falls in Housing Starts and Completions

Building permits for privately-owned housing units rose 0.3% in April to reach a seasonally adjusted rate of 1,760,000, according to the Census Bureau press release. The building permits were 60.9% higher than April 2020.

Housing starts hit an adjusted annual rate of 1.569 million, down 9.5% from revised estimate of 1.733 in March.

Housing completions reached an adjusted annual rate of 1.449 million, down 4.4% from the revised estimate of 1.515 million in March.

Housing starts and completions were 67.3% and 21.7% above April 2020 respectively.

Single-family housing permits fell by 3.8% from March to reach 1.149 million in April.

Single-family housing starts fell by 13.4% from March to hit 1.087 million in April.

Single-family house completions rose by 0.1% to reach 1.045 million in April.
