The Wisconsin State Investment Board (SWIB) has significantly increased its investment in Bitcoin $97,746 during the last three months of the year. This decision reflects the evolving dynamics of the digital asset market and growing interest in alternative investment opportunities.

In the fourth quarter, the Board raised its shares in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust from approximately 2.9 million to over 6 million. This increase is viewed as a strategic move towards digital assets in SWIB’s portfolio.

Other Moves in the Sector

The Board became a first-time buyer of a Bitcoin ETF in 2024, initially acquiring 94,562 shares, while also obtaining shares from Grayscale’s Bitcoin Fund, part of which was later sold. Other state institutions are reportedly shifting towards similar investment vehicles.

The amount of shares held by SWIB is valued at approximately 321 million dollars by year-end, and considering the current Bitcoin price, this figure could rise to around 588 million dollars, demonstrating the impact of market fluctuations on investor portfolios.

Established in 1951, the Wisconsin Investment Board manages assets worth over 156 billion dollars, executing various investment strategies on behalf of state employees and different trust funds.

Reports indicate that the Michigan Retirement System has also included similar digital investment tools in its portfolio. These institutional moves indicate a trend towards increasing the role of traditional investment firms in the digital asset market.

Institutions managing assets worth at least 100 million dollars closely monitor market movements through quarterly reports submitted to the SEC. These reports are considered significant indicators in shaping interest and investment strategies in digital assets.

SWIB’s decision stands out as a result of risk and opportunity assessments within the digital asset class. Developments related to investment strategies are closely monitored by other institutions, providing insights into the overall market dynamics.
