(CoinTelegraph) International Monetary Fund Chief Economist Gita Gopinath has urged for a global policy on cryptocurrency regulation, rather than totally banning the space.
Gopinath believes that a ban on cryptocurrencies would lead to countries having no control over offshore exchanges not covered by their jurisdictions, which could effectively lead to them being completely disregarded.
Gopinath, in an international forum, noted that a total ban on crypto would face several hurdles, as many exchanges are offshore and are thus not subject to regulations of a certain country.
Her latest remarks are in line with the countries looking to regulate cryptocurrencies, with nations such as China and India looking to impose measures to gain regulatory authority over the space.
Gopinath is scheduled to take over as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
