The World Could Record First Electric Aircraft Flight in Less than Half a Decade

Manufacturers are competing to launch the first electric aircraft, reports Seeking Alpha. The competition could lead to the launch of the first commercial passenger flight of an electric vertical take-off and landing in the next three to five years.

  • Whereas Advanced Air Mobility could capture around 30% of the express post/same-day delivery market, greater uptake is expected in low-cost last-mile connection options that interface easily.
  • Last week, United Airlines announced it would buy 200 eVTOL aircraft from Archer, a deal valued at $1 billion with an option for an additional $500 billion of the planes.
  • Major auto and aviation players such as Toyota and Airbus are also pursuing the flying taxi market.
  • In December, the Federal Aviation Administration announced new drone rules to open the skies for widespread commercial deliveries, allowing operators to fly small drones under certain conditions.

The electric vertical take-off and landing market is projected to double in size to as high as 30,000 due to the aircraft replacement cycle and as batteries evolve.
