Canadian September Employment Rises, Beats Expectations

Canadian employment is up 2.1% to 378,200 in September, more than analysts’ 150,000 estimate, according to press release. Unemployment rate is 9.0%, better than estimated 9.8%.

  • Full time employment change is up 2.1% to 334,000 versus previous 205,800
  • Part time employment change is up 1.3% to 44,200 versus previous 40,000
  • September employment was down 3.7% or 720,000 compared to February before full impacts of COVID-19
  • Labour force  participation is 64.8% versus 64.7% estimate
  • Hourly wage rate gained 5.4% versus 5.6% estimate, year on year basis.
  • Employment continued increasing in services and goods producing sectors at 2.1% and 2.0% respectively
